Why is gut health important?

If you have an interest in health, you've probably heard the term gut health. After all, the stomach plays a vital role in our overall health.

But what does gut health mean? The term refers to the overall health of the entire digestive system and how well it functions. Gut health involves maintaining a healthy gut microbiota, absorbing nutrients effectively, and maintaining a strong gut barrier.

Your gut microbiota

Not surprisingly, nutrition is essential to a healthy gut. But gut health is more than eating a healthy diet; it also involves increasing the diversity of bacteria in the body.

All the microorganisms in your body, including bacteria, yeast, fungi, viruses and parasites, make up what’s called your microbiota. Your microbiota consists of trillions of bacteria belonging to thousands of different species and approximately 90-95% of these can be found in the gut. A more diverse gut microbiota is considered to be a healthier microbiota.

Gut health and probiotics

Probiotic supplements containing specific probiotic strains can enhance gut bacteria diversity by supporting the growth and balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This promotes a healthy and diverse gut microbiota.

A diverse gut microbiota is associated with numerous health benefits, including aiding with digestion, strengthening the immune system, and improving overall health.
